    TRAVEL

AIR -- Santa Cruz has to be reached either through the San Jose airport (SJC) or San Francisco airport (SFO).  SJC is closer than SFO.  Typical roundtrip airfares from the East Coast are in the range $300 to $500.

SHUTTLE -- It is relatively easy to get around Santa Cruz without a car.  Hence, taking a shuttle from/to the airport may be a good option .  During the workshop, we will provide shuttle transportation between Casa Blanca Inn and workshop venues.  There are multiple restaurants, shops and points of interest (muni wharf, boardwalk, downtown)  within an easy walking distance from the hotel.  Here is a good web portal, which provides visitor information about Santa Cruz

Update (08/30/02):  We will send UCSC vans to each of the two major nearby airports (SFO = San Francisco, SJC = San Jose) to pick up participants arriving between ~12PM and ~1:30PM on Thursday (10/03/2002).  Please, let me (tulaczyk@es.ucsc.edu) know your arrival time and flight number if you are interested in this mode of transportation.  The vans will also go to the airports on Sunday afternoon.

There is one major shuttle company connecting Santa Cruz to the two major international airports (the Santa Cruz Airporter ).  It takes ca. 80 minutes (and ca. $35 one way) to travel between SFO and Santa Cruz, whereas its only ca. 50-minute trip (and ca. $30 one way) from/to SJC.  If you are planning to take the shuttle, you MUST reserve your ride at least five days in advance (800-497-4997 or 831-423-1214).  You will get the lower rates quoted here if you mention that you are traveling on 'UCSC business.'   Shuttles depart every two hours for Santa Cruz from SFO and SJC starting at 9AM and ending at 11PM.

CAR -- Cars can be rented at both of the major airports near Santa Cruz.  These maps and driving directions will help you find your way from/to the airport.   Freeways may get congested if you drive to Santa Cruz PM during a work day and AM on the weekend.  Going the opposite way, the busy times tend to be AM during the week and PM on the weekend.  Highway 17 is notorious for bad traffic and car accidents.  The commuter traffic can be fast and agressive on this windy 4-lane road across the Santa Cruz Mts.

Location of Casa Blanca Inn is shown on these maps: (1) regional view of hotel location, and (2) local view.

PARKING -- If you plan to park your car on campus during the workshop, we will provide you with a map showing the locations of visitor parking lots.
