Research
Interests
My research group's main interests are in the interaction among aerosols,
clouds and climate. Aerosols and clouds are important to a number of key
climate processes, such as precipitation, the Earth's energy balance,
biogeochemical cycles, and atmospheric transport. They are also amongst
the most poorly understood, and thus pose serious limitations on our
ability to predict how Earth's climate may change in the future.
My group focuses on conducting observations of aerosols and clouds, both
in the field and in the laboratory, although we do make use of computer
models as well. One of the primary limitations in understanding these
scientific issues is the lack of observational data. Therefore, we devote
some of our effort to developing new instruments in order to make novel or
improved measurements of aerosols and clouds. Observations are often
conducted as part of large organized projects, and we participate in both
aircraft and ground-based measurement campaigns.
