The following CLOTHING is also recommended:
Deep Springs and Owens Valleys are typically hot and dry during the day (though it can get humid). Temperatures range from the high 80's to over 100 degrees F. Shorts and light, loose fitting clothing work fine with lots of sunscreen, but others may prefer to cover up completely. The latter is best for your skin, but be sure to keep the clothing light weight, light colored and breathable so as to avoid heat stroke. Hats are a must, and light, wide-brimmed, airy models such as the cheap ‘beach bum’ straw hats from Long’s work best. Sturdy footwear is also a must. Field boots or ‘running-style’ shoes both work, depending on your preference and the degree of ankle support you need. We will spend a significant amount of time on relatively steep slopes. In addition, keep in mind that the Poleta Fold Belt the terrain is rocky with many prickly plants, and these tend to chew up shoe soles (and pants and knees on occasion) expensive clothing/boots are not recommended. Alternatively, the Owens Valley does host some very pleasant watering holes, so bring your swimming togs!
