The UCSC 2006 188A and B field site headquarters (‘Camp Nelson’) is a US Forest Service group campsite located at the top of Westgard Pass (Hwy. 168) and at the junction of the White and Inyo Mountain Ranges, at ~7000’ elevation. The route to the camp is: east over the Sierras via either Sonora Pass (Hwy. 108) or Tioga Pass (Hwy. 120), south on Hwy. 395, past Bishop, to the north end of the small town of Big Pine, east on Hwy. 168 to the top of Westgard Pass (Figure 1). On Westgard Pass, turn left (north) at the group campground sign, just past White Mountain Rd. (see Figures below).
Camp Nelson is a dry camp, meaning that we haul our own water (in a 350 gallon water tank), use pit toilets and/or porta-potties, and do our utmost to conserve our aqueous resources. Nevertheless, we anticipate having enough water for washing up, water bottles, and showers. The camp setup is rather elaborate, featuring a working kitchen (3 refrigerators, freezer, stove and oven), hot water on-demand showers, solar-powered lighting, and multiple study areas with tables, chairs and lights.
