Transportation & Driving

University vans (seven and eight passenger) will be used to travel from UCSC to the field campsite and from camp to the field and back each day.  We will have enough vans to accommodate everyone who would like to use them as transport from Santa Cruz to the White-Inyo Mountains and back, and we encourage you to avail yourself of this option (hey – why pay for gas twice?).  However, if you want or need to use your own vehicle at your own expense to drive out to field camp, you are free to do so.  Please consider carpooling if you do bring your own car.  On days off, the UCSC vans may be used for local excursions such as going to Bishop (for laundry, lattes, etc…), going to the Owens River, and so on.

The success of summer field depends in large part on daily, safe and efficient transport from UCSC to our camp and from our camp to our field site each day.  Thus we encourage all of you to sign up to be official drivers so that we can all share in providing this most crucial service.  To become an official driver please see Linda Kenter in A232a (the main department office), and take your Driver’s License with you.  DO NOT sign up to be a driver if you are not confident of your van-driving skills or of your ability to drive carefully and safely.  We have had problems in the past with irresponsible driving and with abuse of university vehicles, but these were not problems last year and we intend to continue that tradition in 2006.
Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages (driver or passengers), transporting open containers of alcoholic beverages or driving while intoxicated when in university vehicles are absolutely forbidden.  Transgression of these rules will result in immediate termination of your summer field enrollment.
