The use of remote sensing to study and evaluate resource production regions around the globe is a fairly recent addition to the toolkits of managers and scientists. Though remote sensing represents a new paradigm of earth system science and a source of previously unavailable information and insight, limitations do exist, just as they do with any other data source.

The following pages provide a brief overview of remote sensing, its principles and foundations, as well as addressing common inquiries regarding its application to certain resource and environmental questions or problems.
