IASPEI Task Group:

``Seismic Scattering and Heterogeneity'',

IASPEI Commission on Seismological Observation and Interpretation

The Goal and Tasks of the Task Group

The goal of the Task Group is to promote the international collaborations and interactions among scientists around the world on wave propagation and scattering in heterogeneous earth. The commission can overcome some limitations of regional associations and take the advantages of having international symposia and workshops to exchange information, discuss important issues among members, and report progress in different fronts. The specific tasks of the Task Group could include:

1. Organize international meetings, workshops, training courses on the related topics, or help to organize symposia in more general topics for IASPEI or IUGG etc..

2. Exchange information in an international scope periodically through internet and e-mails. This can maintain the efficient information exchange between the assemblies.

3. Compile Progress Reports on wave propagation and scattering in heterogeneous media. At least, there should be one progress report for each IASPEI Symposium( for 4 years). In the report, the theoretical and methodological progresses during the period should be summarized.

On the basis of the progress report, we can consider to publish IASPEI monographes.

4. Sponsor and organize special programs. These special programs need international coordinations and collaborations. I can think of two examples of this kinds of programs:

5. Maintain a constructive relation with AGU, EGS, SEG, EAGE, SSA and other regional, professional associations by co-sponsoring some symposia, workshops and training courses of common interests.
