Lodging, Travel & Other Logistical Information

Accommodations:

We have a block of rooms at the Dream Inn Hotel (Dec 11-13). The rate is $169/night (single/double). You need to make your own reservation by phone or using the web site below. If by phone, mention the group ID (UCSC Carbon Workshop – C)

Travel: 

Air:  You can fly into either San Jose (SJC) or San Francisco (SFO) airports.  SJC is 40 minutes to SC, SFO is 60 minutes.

Airports to Santa Cruz: We'll try to arrange car pools for most of the participants. For drivers, directions to Santa Cruz are listed below. Taxis will be in excess of $150.

Shuttle: We will be arranging a single van to collect participants who arrive Friday evening at SFO. Commercial services to SC have limited service.

CAR RENTAL: Others will need to rent cars or car pool. One-way rentals to SC with Hertz are possible and often relatively inexpensive. The Hertz office (Center Street) is just a few blocks from the hotel. The other option is to rent at the airport and drop off in downtown San Francisco (near Union Square) on Sunday. I suggest that at least several participants arrange for this.

DIRECTIONS TO SANTA CRUZ FROM SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT.

Follow the exit signs from the airport car rental area to the freeway (Highway 101). Take 101 South (toward San Jose) to 85 South.  Take 85 South to 17 South.  Take 17 South into Santa Cruz.  As you near Santa Cruz you will see signs for Highway 1 North (exit will be on the right).  Take 1 North (a.k.a. Mission St.) to Bay Street (the 6th traffic light).  Turn Left onto Bay Street, stay on Bay until it ends, turn left on to West Cliff Drive, and the Dream Inn Hotel will be just to the right. Entire trip should take about 80 minutes if traffic is light, much longer during rush hour. (Google Maps)

DIRECTIONS TO SANTA CRUZ FROM SAN JOSE AIRPORT

Take Coleman Avenue to 880 South.  880 becomes 17. Stay on 17 South into Santa Cruz.  As you near Santa Cruz you will see signs for Highway 1 North (bear to the right). Take 1 North (a.k.a. Mission St.) to Bay Street (the 6th traffic light).  Turn Left onto Bay Street, stay on Bay until it ends, turn left on to West Cliff Drive, and the Dream Inn Hotel will be just to the right. Entire trip should take about 50 minutes if traffic is light, much longer during rush hour. (Google Maps
