The idea to look for reversal records on Kauai came to Rob one idyllic day at Kalalau beach on the Napali coast (photo on Geodynamo page). Scott Bogue liked the idea, and found records of two reversals during his Ph.D. research in thick sections of 4-5 million year old lava flows along the coast and in the interior. These yielded information about how both the magnetic field direction and intensity changed in the course of polarity reversal. Since then we've carried out similar work on Maui and Oahu.
