Field camp for summer 2001, northern Tibet Summer snow. Even 4x4 jeeps needed a cable to get out of the muddy snowfield. Drilling on a slippery day (these Tertiary red sediments are now at 5,500 meters above sea level!) Our Chinese colleagues help collecting samples. Tricky river crossing. Wild donkeys running on the plateau (no human beings live there). Here at an altitude of 4767 meters the Chinese characters say "the mouth of Kun Lun Mountain." A Tibetan monk.
